We will never cease to be amazed by the capacity of Japanese artists to create real beauty from simple, humble materials. Paper has been a recurring source of treasure in Japanese culture over the centuries, the undisputed king of origami. Enter a new player; the often under-appreciated (and origami challenging) ribbon.
Ribbonesia is the latest project by artist and illustrator ‘Baku’ Maeda and his creative team in Sapporo. After years working in two-dimensional mediums, Baku has been recently exploring the three-dimensional and sculptural forms of ribbon and other fabric materials.
Fascinated by animals since he was a kid, it was no surprise that Baku’s creature-love became the inspiration for this beautiful collection of ornaments. A zoo of creatures comes alive by carefully bending and twisting, selecting colours and delicately crafting the ribbons by hand, taking the art of gift wrapping to the next level. Each piece is unique, just like a great gift should be.
