EVERYONE’S TYPE
“Most things in our lives are based on something silly and anarchic” says Fenella Smith, co-author of Breeds, a tongue-in-cheek watercolour guide of over 100 types of dogs (and one smug cat), paired with sharp commentary detailing our four-legged friends’ inner identity.
Smith is the founder of her namesake homewares store Fenella Smith, an online marketplace renowned for its ceramics, stationery and linens adorned in quirky illustrations drawn by Smith’s brother Greg, one half of creative duo The Brothers McLeod. For Breeds, third sibling Myles (the other brother McLeod), joined the team. Says Myles McLeod; “Writing the book was a lot of fun. We wanted it to be amusing, but also to have some real information in there. We looked out for interesting facts like famous owners, interesting physical traits, unusual breed origins. Fenella and I did half of the breeds each, then swapped to edit each other’s work.”
Here, elegant Afghan hounds wear curlers (they do ‘have a tendency to be slightly aloof’), Dalmatians clutch diplomas (after all, their ‘steady gaze suggests it knows a great deal more than you and possibly has a PHD’) and Foxhounds drink pints (‘if they were human, you’d find them propping up the bar, last man standing, on a Friday night’).
Any animal owner will tell you their pet has a personality, and the compendium is a witty reminder of the joy, humour and curios quirks we can find in each and every one of them.
