THE CALL OF THE WILD

Harrison Ford has taken on a role that was portrayed in the past by Clark Gable, Charlton Heston, and Rutger Hauer before him: the character John Thornton in the latest cinematic adaptation of Jack London’s 1903 novel The Call of the Wild. John Thornton becomes a human companion to Buck, the big St Bernard-Scotch collie mix who’s the heart of the story. The two meet in Yukon, Canada during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, and head off on an adventure into the great unknown together. Interestingly, Buck was portrayed using motion capture by Terry Notary, who you might recognise from that dinner scene in 2017’s Palme d’Or winning film The Square. Watch The Call of the Wild on Google Play, iTunes, and more.

TOGO

He may not have a statue in Central Park devoted to him like Balto does, but Togo was the unsung hero husky of the 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska. Togo, a film starring Willem Dafoe, is here to tell his story. While Balto and his team ran the final leg of the run transporting diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Togo led his team through the longest and most hazardous leg of the journey, covering 264 miles (Balto ran 55). He navigated his fellow sled dogs and their musher Leonhard Seppala (played by Dafoe) through white-out storms, over a mountain and across the perilous exposed ice of Norton Sound. You can watch Togo on Disney+.

ROMPO I LACCI

Directed by Tilda Swinton and starring her four handsome springer spaniels romping and playing fetch in sea, fields and lakes. Set to the aria “Rompo i lacci” from Handel’s Opera Flavio, performed by countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo.

THE WRONG END OF THE STICK

Grippingly cringeworthy in places and subtly endearing throughout, The Wrong End of the Stick is a dark comedy by Terri Matthews. Malcolm’s humdrum life is interrupted by an identity crisis, leading him down a bizarre and beautiful tale of things left unsaid, leg-humping, and plenty of awkward staring. Set against a live-action background, but with very human animated characters, Matthews manages to expertly play with humour and heart, touching on carnal urges, communication and open-mindedness.

Iggy Pop and Nick Cave join forces to support PETA.

HOUND

A buff wolf jealous of his brother eating cooked meat by the campfire. A boozy bulldog sinking shots at the pub. A dachshund with centipede-like legs. A great Dane the size of a house. And a god-like pug. These are some of the surreal, bizarre, and hilarious canine characters of Hound, a short film by Melbourne-based animator and illustrator, Georgia Kriss.

CANINE FREESTYLE

An endearing insight into Patie Ventre (and Sassy), founder of canine freestyle, a relatively new sport where dogs and people mix training, tricks, and dance in choreographed performances. Don’t knock it until you try it.

Directed by Josh and Jen Gross for Nowness.
