When mini dachshund Bunny and foxy cross Ona came into Natalie Moore’s life, so, too, did the idea for D0gh0use. A lover of bricks-and-mortar stores, she set up shop four months ago in retail collective Newrybar Merchants in the Byron hinterland, curating a delightful nook filled with well-made, environmentally conscious dog products. ‘The ethics of the brand, how and where things are made, materials used and aesthetic all inform my decision,’ Moore explains. ‘I love the thoughtfulness that goes into a handcrafted product. I’m not interested in servicing the masses so quality over quantity is more important to me, and if it takes longer to make, it’s definitely worth the wait.’

D0gh0use’s considered approach has led to an array of treats and goodies for both dogs and humans. Choose leashes made from marine grade rope, organic cotton or vegetable-tanned leather, and natural cotton rope or felt toys. Soft on your dog and gentle on the environment. ‘I like dogs to be dogs,’ Moore says. ‘I want them to be safe and comfortable, so natural materials that age beautifully and simple design that ensures products are built to be enjoyed for years to come for both owner and dog is paramount.’

Local customers from bustling Byron Bay mix with visitors from all over Australia and beyond, and each dog that comes sniffing is a highlight. Of course, Bunny and Ona are in prime position to help. ‘They try all the products for comfort and style,’ Moore says. ‘Bunny calls the shots though; typical dachshund.’

If you fancy staying longer, check-in at D0gh0use hotel, catering from day-care to elongated stays. ‘The idea came from my own personal experience,’ Moore explains. ‘My small dogs get anxious and defensive around large dogs, and I wanted somewhere exclusively for dogs of their size so they could be looked after in a calm and stress-free atmosphere.’ A home away from home, small dogs can doze in the sun or by the fire inside and explore the garden and large fenced yard. Set one kilometre from Mullumbimby, it’s peaceful, green and away from the hustle and bustle of suburbia, so put your paws up and relax.
