GOOD MORNING

Morning light slowly creeping into a neat bedroom. A dog lying curled up on the floor by a bed. A plate of eggs. Yellow cable-knit sweaters. Tokyo-based designer-turned-artist Fumi Koike’s illustrations are quiet little slices of life. Moments in time, especially taking place in the morning. “In my drawings I try to convey the feeling of the seasons changing, a warm breeze, clear air and the hushed sounds of everyone waking up,” Koike said. “The comfort of a fluffy dog’s fur, hot drinks, a freshly cooked meal. All of these things are part of the daily routine but so important.”

Her printed publication, Dog and Morning compiles illustrations shown at an exhibition of the same title at Do Design in Madrid. Koike is particularly fond of dogs and also illustrates all kinds of breeds, from Siberian huskies to dachshunds. All of the images have a kind of sweet naivety to them. “It’s so joyful to draw for someone else. It’s such pleasure when somebody is happy with my work,” Koike said.

PACK OF DOGS

Have you ever imagined Amy Winehouse or Nick Cave as a Chihuahua, Neil Young as a Vizsla, or PJ Harvey as an Afghan hound? That’s exactly what San Francisco-based artist Michael Gillette has done through his unique illustration project, blending beloved, iconic music legends, both past and present, with their dog counterparts. Pack of Dogs, our first foray into book publishing, is a celebration of pup and pop culture for music and dog lovers alike.
