s READ MOREFashion needs a body. But more than that, it demands a character, a mood, a style to bring it to life. A suit on a hanger is just that—material over an object, clothes in a sleepy state. But a simple suit worn with unabashed confidence—paired with the wearer’s own zest—that’s fashion. Animated and alive. Now, consider what Francis Bacon called ‘art in living forms’ not being confined to humans. Unpick that convention, and we enter a whole new world of self-expression. A world that welcomes our pets.
Born during the COVID tumult of 2020, THEANIMALS™ is a ‘first-to-market species-fluid fashion brand’. Founded by Jo Goldman (who, like the rest of us, was glued to her dog, Rosie, through the long months of lockdown), THEANIMALS™ blends Goldman’s experience in art and fashion to create something undeniably bold and fresh. A highly considered, anti-mass produced line of premium-quality pieces that are designed to be shared, mixed and matched between human and hound.
With diversity, creativity and collaboration at its heart, THEANIMALS™’ future will be shaped by the skills, ideas and visions of global artists working with Goldman. Starting with legendary photographer Georges Antoni, no less. Taking ‘owners who look like their pets’ to new, high-fashion heights, Antoni captures the essence of THEANIMALS™ and its founder in the brand’s Resort 2023 launch campaign. Playful, sophisticated, editorial and fabulous. “Georges was incredible. I wanted the best and he was the best! He completely understood the vision I had and captured it perfectly. It was beyond my wildest dreams and one of the highlights of my career to work with him,” tells Goldman.
Paired with the brand’s signature piece, the Smoking Collar, Antoni’s work belongs on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. It’s not a far-fetched thought when browsing THEANIMALS™’ launch collection—a capsule of beautifully crafted, statement-making leather collars, leads and harnesses in ‘Blanc’ and ‘Cinnamon’. Not to mention gold-plated brass jewellery and pendants. With a ‘yours and theirs’ matching ensemble, prepare to stop traffic on your daily walk.
