s READ MOREIf Italian cashmere, Portuguese cotton, and merino wool sound like textiles you’d like to wrap yourself in, get ready to swoon over The Painter’s Wife dog duds. The name, which stems from a personal joke, is meant to recall both the brilliant women and the incredible canines behind many contemporary artists; the styles are inspired by their works.
“When conceiving our project, I had the idea of using all those beautiful images I had in mind of dogs in art history, and from many of my favourite painters with their dogs as loyal companions,” says co-founder Rosana A. Agrelo, an art historian and curator, who formed the brand with her husband, Josep Pintor, a veterinarian. The pair’s winsome collection reflects their combined efforts, rendering a spotted coat inspired by John Baldessari, minimalist basics channeling Josef Albers, David Hockney-esque striped t-shirts, and more, in vet-approved materials and fits.
The range is seasonless to help reduce consumption, and is ethically produced from high quality fabrics to increase each piece’s longevity. They recognise that our four-legged friends don’t need as much clothing as us humans, and have made the responsible decision to limit what they make. “We’re able to grow as long as our project is getting bigger, and according to client feedback and our production capacity,” says Agrelo.
In addition to caring for the planet, the Galicia-based brand actively works with Yaracan, a local initiative focused on dog-assisted therapy for children and the elderly. Their altruistic endeavours speak volumes, but it’s likely their creative expression that will first catch your eye. In their social media, Agrelo mixes The Painter’s Wife products with her favourite images from art—like Pablo Picasso in his underwear, standing proud with his Afghan hound—to put a fresh spin on practical garments “made from the best materials.”
We are thrilled to introduce Dog-Friendly, a collection of city guides for dog-loving people, created together with our long-time contributor, photographer Winnie Au, and fellow enthusiasts, indie publisher Hoxton Mini Press. Available for purchase here.
