THROUGH THE FOG

Woodburn, an eerie forest near depleted by a vicious tree disease was the place where inspiration struck for Matthew Gordon. Twenty minutes drive from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Woodburn is a familiar walking spot for the photographer, who grew up nearby. Gordon and his English Springer Spaniel, Joey, were exploring the area one particularly foggy day while maintenance work was being carried out on the reservoirs.

The machines could be heard but not seen, obscured by the fog, and the noise of them made Joey stop intermittently to look around. Gordon couldn’t help but photograph his apprehensive dog in this otherworldly location. “As I am a big movie fan, I am most interested in drama and atmosphere within photography. I love the idea of a single frame telling a narrative,” Gordon said. Over five months Gordon worked on the project, capturing the best light early in the morning. “Focusing on the pup, the solitary trees and the setting, I have made a piece of work that ruminates on a landscape’s ability to retain traces of memory.”
